[The Godfather II]

IDGI. What was there to ship? There wasn't anything very romantic or intense about them, nor were there any high emotional stakes.

Really? That just seems like a really strange ship, I don't know, I'm sorry. Not because there's not emotion; just in the broader context of the movies, it's so clearly doomed to failure. And like, if nothing else, the end of the first movie seems like it would close the door (doh ho ho ho) on them having a happy, fulfilling relationship.

OP

Idk, maybe it's because I started out reading the novel, not watching the films. Kay is a POV character, and I identified with her because she was the closest to my own experience (young, educated, somewhat independent but also sheltered girl), and I also got invested in her relationship with Michael, which starts out as sweet. (And I love them both a lot as characters.) When I got around to watching the movies, I had no idea what would be happening in Part II, and I was devastated over how bad it got, even though in hindsight, it made perfect sense and was masterfully done. (GF II is my favorite movie.)

I was also like, 15 at the time XD But yeah, they'll always have a special place in my heart despite everything, and Michael Corleone will always be a crush for me, along with Tom Hagen.

I feel like that makes a lot more sense if you read the book first, actually. There's just a lot more time to get invested in them, whereas the first Godfather is three hours long and they're pretty estranged by the end of it.

Same here OP! Well, almost. I watched the films first, then read the novel, and then watched the films again. After reading the novel, my reaction to Michael and Kay's relationship and separation was more intense than before, it really broke my heart.

And Michael has always been a crush of mine as well :P

It's a pretty intense scene; I remembered the first time I watched it and was legit scared at what Michael was going to do.

I felt bad for both of them, but more for Kay, who thought she was signing up for something different when she married him (and Michael kept assuring her he was different).

I also wonder if Apallonia hadn't died, if everyone would've been happier.

I haven't read the book though, so I don't know. But anyway it's cool to see a Godfather secret!

OT but...I remember leaving a comment on YT years ago for this scene, and I wrote down that it was a tough relationship but who could really deal with such a messed up relationship and I thought the scene was well done, you really feel for Kay. And then a couple people were all, "LOL Why are you taking this so seriously? Grow up, loser." It was the early YT commenting years for me, so it really hurt my feelings. =( Sorry for the OT, but seeing this just reminded me of that.

Don't worry, OP. I was pretty heartbroken, too. I also read the book before watching The Godfather Part II so I felt a lot more for Michael and Kay's relationship.
