Re: awkward questions

Not lately, but one time a business associate (if you will) came into the office, and could not get over the fact that my coworker, who'd lost weight, wasn't "fat" anymore. She then turned to me and said, "did you know Kimmie when she was fat?"

I just sort of stared back because I was so horrified. Unfortunately I didn't think of good answers until that night.

(And this borderline fat shamey woman wasn't exactly slender herself.)

Ugh awkward!

This sort of goes with mine. I lost 45 pounds this year mostly from being really sick, and when I tell people this, they say that it's wonderful and lucky, and then some of them ask how they too can get sick enough to lose that much weight.

AYRT - Oh, that's awful. :/ People can be so stupid.

Your reaction was correct and the most polite one you could've given, under the circumstances. Miss Manners is big on genteel shock as a response to indelicate questions!
