Re: Apologies and nonapologies

nayrt, I feel like "I'm sorry I offended you" can be a flip non-apology, OR it can be a genuine expression of regret that offense was caused.

If it's a controversial topic we're discussing, I may still hold to my opinion, or whatever it was that I'm apologizing for, but I don't want to cause other people pain/distress. However, as some people seem to presume "I'm offended" automatically equals "your opinion is offensive", nothing less than a full retreat will do.

And I do find it funny/sad how some people parse out apologies to find the incorrect word, or not quite properly phrased statement, so that they can declare the apology null and void.
