Because I like these threads, and because today's sports news was priceless.

All those bribes FIFA has been taking finally caught up with them. Nine FIFA executives and five additional people associated with the bribes all got arrested today. (Did anyone seriously think Qatar got to host the World Cup by a fair and honest decision?) http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/soccer/2015/05/27/fifa-officials-arrested-corruption-charges-extradition-united-states/27997783/

For some bonus info on why this is important: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2015/05/27/a-body-count-in-qatar-illustrates-the-consequences-of-fifa-corruption/

I'm glad to hear it, Fifa got on my nerves the last few years

They just better get Blatter with this too.

Even on the microscopically infintesimal off-chance that he didn't know what was going on, he's been in charge for almost two fucking decades. At the very least he's been dangerously inept and someone more capable needs to take over that job.

He knew what was going on (as I'm sure you know, but just making it clear).

That said I think they'll get him. RICO is a hell of a thing.

Not that FIFA aren't corrupt as hell, but that is scary global dictator stuff that America has come up with there. I wish China would hurry up and catch up as a superpower, because America on its own is a fucking scary evil overlord getting. I would have hoped for the EU, but the global economic collapse and the Arab Spring on its borders have nobbled it as a power for at least fifty years.

You know what America didn't do? Tibet.

Well America is the only country that ever dropped an atomic bomb on a country. Twice.

Right, as the world goes, is only in question between equals in power, while the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.

Re: News roundup

It doesn't have to do anything except exist as a Superpower and prevent global actions. I'd go so far as to say that America was at its most noble and least aggressive when faced with a counterweight to its policies and potential alternative world power to whom others might turn to for patronage. Playing America and the USSR off each other led to some of the best living standards my country ever had.

That's maybe nice for your country. Not so great for places like Vietnam, though, or Cambodia.

I'm an American myself so maybe biased, but I would argue that the Cold War led us to do some of the darkest, most awful shit in our history.

Wow. I'm glad that global brinksmanship worked out so well for you. Um, congratulations, I guess?

Not sure the home of the United Fruit Company and the scourge of Latin America has anything to strut about in that area.
