Well yeah. The only folk I know who've done it near regularly are my sister's SO and a friend's family who irks me. I've done rideshares with strangers before, and it's always been hit or miss, but "vetting" folk I'm going to be spending a few days is something I have to be sure on.

AB definitely has loads, more so once you head towards the Rockies or the border. The off trail ones are what I'm thinking of if I get accustomed to back country. However Banff is probably where I'm going to start, though certain trails are popular enough that it would feel like I may as well be in a campground.

You mentioned a cell. My wind phone is pretty much useless in case of emergency every time I leave the roaming zones. Wouldn't something like radio be more reliable? (getting a temp plan notwithstanding)

What you're really looking for with a phone is something with GPS. If your 4G service doesn't work, the idea is you'll at least be able to track yourself. (I personally tested my own phone in an area with no service. It took around 4 minutes but the GPS still worked.)

I'm not entirely sure this would be the same for you with your phone model, especially if it's older.

There are outdoor sports companies that specifically rent out portable GPS devices for longer term camping/hiking/boating trips though, so if your phone isn't an option look into one of those. They're usually super cheap because having one is better than getting lost and needing a search party to come find you.

Oh then I should be fine. I remember saving a bunch of google maps in case of taking detours to Canmore, and gps was great for that.

Thank you for these tips!
