but I did learn to do the left/right thing but holding up my hands and making L shapes; the one with the L that's not backwards is left.

I am straight so they were right about one person. Though statistically speaking they're probably right about many of them.
ETA: I just did it again as an experiment, and I guess I start with the curled fingers thing, and then sometimes turn my hand over and look at it that way. So I guess they were not so right after all.
I have never given this any thought before but I bet I will think about this conversation next time I check my nails.
