So the cops just showed up at my door

(Anonymous) 2015-05-30 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'd just gotten out of the shower when someone started banging on my door. I looked out, and it was a young (late teens/early 20s) guy and girl. I didn't know them, so I just ignored it.

As soon as they left, I realized my phone was missing, and thought maybe they'd found it outside and that's why they were knocking on the door. So I ran outside (still in my bath robe) looking frantically around for it. As I was getting ready to go back inside, the young guy pops back up and asks if I live here. I tell him I do, he asks if I'm sure (what kind of question is that?), I say yes, he says he and the girl were supposed to dog sit for someone, and this was the address they were given. I say they have the wrong address and go back inside.

A few minutes later, someone's banging at my door again. This time it's a freaking cop. I thought maybe the young kids had done something and he was looking for them, but he asked who I am. I tell him I live here and he
asks if I have ID. I show it to him, it clearly has my picture and this address. He said there'd been a "discrepancy", and I told him I already talked to the guy about the dog sitting and they'd obviously gotten the wrong address. It's obviously me in on my ID so he walks back around front. I went to look out the other window, and the young guy and girl are with two other cops, and the girl pulls out her phone to show them the text message with the address. I guess they figured I was a burglar or something because I wasn't who they were expecting, so they called the cops!

I was getting ready to go to go back out but I guess it's a good thing I hadn't left. My mom commented that if I hadn't been home, they probably would've busted the door down or something.

I'm the same one who had a hysterical girl show up at my door at 3:30 AM a couple weeks ago, if anyone remembers that.

Hopefully my excitement is over for awhile!

They thought you were a burglar in a bathrobe??

I guess. At least, that's the only explanation I can think of. I mean, you show up to dog sit for someone and it turns out you got the wrong address, so you call the cops? The only reason I can think of is that they thought some sort of crime had occurred or something, but it was just weird.

DA

Sadly, not as unusual as you may think.

I feel like there's a story behind this

that burglars wear bathrobes, or that people think they do?

That guy and girl are seriously dumb if they thought you were robbing a house while dressed in a bathrobe.

Did you find your phone?

Haha, yep, it was in the kitchen. When I got home I was in a hurry to get in the shower (I went to the grocery after hiking so I felt pretty gross) and left it on the counter with the non-cold groceries that I was waiting until after my shower to put away.

Haha I had this happen to me once as a kid, we accidentally set off the security alarm, cop shows up all suspicious like, had to prove we life there (even though kids don't have ID? We found some family pictures)

It's weird that instead of calling the person they got address from they called the cops instead!

hahaha you were in a bathrobe and they called the cops?

that'd be some very elaborate burglaring. and downright stupid, going out of the house for no reason.

that sounds awkward but I hope you got it all sorted! I hope too for the sake of the dog they're supposed to be sitting that they found the right address.

Your house had been target. And how did they mistaked home address for dog-sit for someone?

While it is a bit suspicious, I doubt they would have called the cops if they were targeting the house. As for the address, it might have been a typo or a miss-read and they honestly had the wrong place.

Jeez, you talked to a cop? Are you stupid? Are you wanting to go to jail or be shot? If a cop turns up, you say no comment. If he wants to come in, you ask for their warrant. Do no more than the bare minimum required of you by law, mostly which means asking if the cop is detaining you or if they have a warrant. If the answer is no on either count, silently leave the situation.

I don't think you can really say "no comment" to a cop if they have reason to believe that you're actively committing a crime at that moment.

Yes, you really can. In fact at that point most lawyers will actively encourage you to do so. That is actually the perfect time for you to no comment them.
