I feel like this is a pretty natural progression, tbh. When I was little, I crushed on older men (mostly fictional, though), and always imagined them falling in love with me or with Mary Sues my age. It's the kind of thing you play out in your head as you start to figure out what love is and so on. It's a fantasy, and as long as you eventually realize how creepy this would be IRL, there's no harm in it.

I haven't read Handa-kun, but I did watch Barakamon.

He's still pretty socially awkward and negative, and very much a disdainful fish out of water in a country village. But thanks to the Cast of Quirky Neighbors he starts to open up and become less uptight. Obviously I can't compare the two, but I thought Barakamon was a gently positive slice of life - I thought that the characters around him were generally supportive and encouraging, and by the sounds of it much more perceptive re: his isolation and negativity than his school friends. They definitely try to reach out to him, at least.

I liked Barakamon precisely because I relate a lot to Handa too, and I found the non-pushy way the community embraced him and all his awkwardness to be pretty nice, so you might feel similarly.

It was like a knife in my heart to hear all that about MZB. I absolutely adored The Mists of Avalon. It was brilliant. It's like Orson Scott Card, but even worse. I don't know what to say, other than the work itself is great, but I know personally I can't enjoy it anymore, and I'd never recommend it.
