[Picture of the actress Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark, and of Iwan Rheon as Ramsay Bolton, from a Game of Thrones episode in which Ramsay rapes Sansa in the presence of a witness on their wedding night.]

Text: Sophie has every right to 'secretly love' the rape scene she was in, but if she didn't realize the impact that stating such a thing in an interview would have, she's either more concerned about furthering her career than the safety of women in general ("I knew it! Consent is feminist bullshit - there's no such thing as rape!"), or an idiot (or possibly both). I know she's only just 19, but still… HELL YES I'M JUDGING.

How the fuck does that scene endanger women? It wasn't glorifying rape or saying rape was good. It was shown to be a very bad, evil, and despicable thing to do.

How does her saying she enjoyed filming the scene mean endanger women? I expect it would have been a challenging scene to film and some people enjoy challenges. Also, considering it was offscreen for the most part, they likely didn't get too graphic.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-29 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The idea that women secretly like it or something? Idk I'm not the OP but that may be what OP was going for. I've seen people make that argument.

I think the problem is that it's happened that women being badgered into confessing they have rape fantasies has been used to undermine them when a defence lawyer in a criminal trial uses it to try and reframe the narrative into the MRA/meninist's OMGFALSERAPEACCUSATION narrative.

I saw that scene and it was pretty understatedly creepy, and that's all I'll say on that so I don't need to trigger warning this post.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-29 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
She's young and it wasn't a terribly smart thing to say, yeah.

She described the scene as "daunting" and seemed to like it because she considered it a challenge as an actor. She also called it sick and messed up. How is someone who wasn't already thinking it supposed to read that and come away thinking the thoughts in the parentheses?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-29 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
There are some men who will twist anything a woman says regarding rape into "proof" that all women secretly want to be raped. I can totally see those people getting that from her comments (and obviously, they are idiots because anyone with reading comprehension could get that that's not what she said. But people will see what they want to see). Of course, that's not Sophie Turner's fault, and she probably hasn't encountered those men yet.

The only folks I can think of who would actually believe that are those Return of Kings nutjobs, and they are so faaaaaaar down the rabbit hole that Wonderland isn't giving them up. Nobody with any sense could seriously say that that's what the actress meant.

Nor can I see how anyone can blame the actress when RoK types twist her words.

"I knew it! Consent is feminist bullshit - there's no such thing as rape!"

Wait, what? How did you get that out of her statements?

She said she liked filming the scene, not that it wasn't rape.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-29 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
So actors can't enjoy the challenge of filming controversial scenes now?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-29 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Because that means they condone what happens on screen! Anthony Hopkins actaully enjoys eating people.

That's totally what the secret said.

I'm so tired of seeing "oh, so [people/some group/I] can't (or "aren't allowed to").... now?" in response to every fucking thing.

There's something funny about someone on FS accusing others of being landwhales. Where do you think we are?

Actors have been known to like doing harrowing scenes for pretty much ever though, it's intense and challenging,h and they get to really work - death scenes, traumatic scenes and the like. I think the show's rape obsession is shitty too, but from Sophie Turner's perspective, it makes perfect sense to be excited to be getting heavy material.

And how the actress found the scene has nothing to do with Sansa's consent. They are not the same person.

I haven't read the interview where she said this, but I'd just like to point out that saying you liked a scene as an actor (acting wise, or for your character) is not the same as finding what happened in the scene to be morally good.

You're incredibly obtuse if you think Sophie's comments would leave people to believe that consent doesn't exist.

Like wtf.

If there's assholes out there that deliberately twist her words into rape apologism, then it's not her fault. Lay the blame where it belongs. A young actress should be free to discuss her work, she's not responsible for bridge trolls on the internet being horrible.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-29 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
This whole show could have been written by cats. It's how they mate. And a lot of other animals too. Guess we aren't so different. Judging from the number of women who like watching this kind of stuff you wonder what primal impulses lead us to be fascinated by the violent sexual fantasy. I personally don't get it (nor do I get Shades) but there must be something there that drives the human species in this way.

I'm inclined to cut her a little slack, probably because I'm twice her age. But come on, in a show like that, you're surprised people have weird and creepy attitudes?

Admittedly I haven't read the comments themselves, and I don't watch the show, so I don't have a dog in this fight. But I'm kind of under the impression that a lot of the actors are under gag orders, basically, where they can't say anything negative about the writing or they'll be "punished." I think that might be why Sophie's making comments that come across as somewhat positive towards the scene - because she can't come out and say "oh god that was horrible I hated it I hate what they're doing to Sansa."
