Tracking the posts/threads is also an option, though I don't know whether that needs a paid account these days.

I used to track several posts on the kinkmeme I was involved with, some for fics I was reading and some for my own fics to track comments. As quickly as I'd get comments sometimes, I think a lot of readers who are committed to following certain fics use that method.

I haven't stopped tracking those threads, and it still makes me smile when (years later) I get the odd notification about an update or comment.
