For me I think it depends on the situation, if you just want to rant about something annoying I did but it's not going to affect our relationship at all and it'll just hurt my feelings to hear, I think it's better to just talk behind my back.

But if something is so serious that it could affect the relationship, I think it's better to be honest and confront the person with it. Also for any situation that there are questions about and need to be talked through.

In some cases it's cowardly to talk behind a person's back and in some cases it's for the best, it really depends.
