Where to buy books (new and used); aslo suggestions welcome

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-06-02 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I am doing a reddit gift exchange and the person asked for stuff for their kids.

This is the info they gave me: They like Pokemon cards, Pikmin, video games, books(they really love books), transformers. They're 11, 9, 7 and 5, oldest is a girl.

I was thinking of buying a bunch of books for them. I figure used (in good condition) is probably fine. So any suggestions for sites, book recommendations, OR recommendations for other gifts would be awesome.

I like Better World Books and Thriftbooks.com. They both have some good deals a lot.

Some favorite books and writers when I was a kid: Wayside School books; Gail Carlson Levine, especially Ella Enchanted; Margaret Peterson Haddix; Andrew Clements, especially Things Not Seen; Vivian Vande Velde

It's also garage sale season so scope out garage sales. Around here, you can get a lot of books at a garage sale for 50 cents or a dollar.

For the younger kids, Boxcar Children books were always my favorite.

See if your library does a Friends of the Library sale and books will cheap then too.

For older books, you can check ebay/amazon. I get a lot of books for a penny, plus shipping. I'm not sure what their budget is. On ebay, if it's the same seller, you might be able to combine shipping.

I'll have to try and find some. I wish we had flea markets where I live. There was one back home that had a lady who sold thousands of books for super cheap.

Again, I don't know what your budget is, but search ebay and you can find people selling it by the set.

Happy hunting!

I love abebooks.com! It pulls from multiple vendors and has a lot of customization when searching (like if you're looking for paperback, hardcover, signed, first edition, etc).

Thank you! I am making a list of all these sites so I can start searching. :D

Abebooks is great, though it's owned by Amazon. If the bookseller gives their phone number, I sometimes phone them and order direct; that way they don't have to pay a cut to Amazon.

Oh wow, I didn't know that! Was it always owned by them or did they take it over?

Oooh, books. Thriftbooks.com is a great option! Some thoughts:

if they like Transformers, they might like robots, and so they might like the Bionicles books. My brothers had a bunch of them; they're a young reading level so kids 5-11 y.o. could make it happen.

Ursula Vernon's Dragonbreath series are really cute books, educational but not in an anvilicious way, with loads of fun illustrations. They're like comic book/chapter book hybrids.

Hank the Cowdog is pretty great, although I think best if you have a dad to read them to you and do all the voices. XD

Series of Unfortunate Events: little higher reading level maybe.

IF they like vidwo games they might like Minecraft; you can find Minecraft novels for young readers, although I haven't read any myself.

Asterix and Obelix graphic novels, or Tintin. Some of them are a big un-PC archaic, but there's a lot of good stuff, and fun pics for the younger kids.

10 might be old enough to read the Redwall books: Mossflower is the first one and they are terribly exciting.

Thank you! I loved Hank the Cowdog and Series of Unfortunate Event series. These recs are awesome. I bet the older child would love the Redwall books. :D

Thrift stores are a good place to check, you never know what you might find and the price is usually good. If you're near any locations of Half Price Books, they're also really good. See if they have a clearance section, too.

This is also a good resource to see if there are any library sales near you:

www.booksalefinder.com/

They usually have plenty of kids books and some have sales where it's $3/bag or something like that, so you could score a bunch of good stuff. Below are some recommendations. I've divided them into two categories but really, they could be mixed up depending on the individual kid's reading level and interest:

For the oldest girl:

Patricia C. Wrede's Enchanted Forest chronicles
Anne of Green Gables series
Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness books (some mild sex though)
Garth Nix's Abhorsen trilogy
Scott Westerfield's "Uglies" series if she likes dystopia, or maybe "Leviathan" if she enjoys steampunk
Neil Gaiman's "Coraline" and "The Graveyard Book"
Ellen Raskin's "The Westing Game"
Jean Craighead George's "Julie of the Wolves"
E.L. Konigsburg's "From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler"
Natalie Babbit's "Tuck Everylasting"
Madeleine L'Engle's "A Wrinkle in Time"
Katherine Paterson's "Bridge to Terabithia"
Scott O'Dell's "Island of the Blue Dolphins"
Frances Hodgson Burnett's "The Secret Garden" and "A Little Princess"
Elizabeth George Speare's "The Witch of Blackbird Pond"
Julie Andrews Edwards' "Mandy"
Diana Wynne Jones' The Chronicles of Chrestomanci series

For the younger kids:

All the childrens books by Roald Dahl
Louis Sachar's Wayside School books
Bruce Coville has a bunch of somewhat silly, fun books like "My Teacher is an Alien", etc.
Encyclopedia Brown mysteries
Neil Gaiman's "Odd and the Frost Giants"
John D. Fitzgerald's The Great Brain books are sweet, and all about brothers
R.L. Stine Goosebumps
M. V. Carey's The Three Investigators series - more boys solving mysteries
E. W. Hildick's McGurk mysteries - gang of of kids, solving mysteries
Marjorie Weinman Sharmat's Nate the Great books (for the youngest since it's got more pictures as well as a story)
Jean Craighead George's "My Side of the Mountain"
Norton Juster's "The Phantom Tollbooth"
Anything by John Bellairs if they like scary stories, but be aware some of it is kind of freaky for a childrens book
Zilpha Keatley Snyder's "The Egypt Game" and Green Sky Trilogy
Robert C. O'Brien's "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH"
E. B. White's "Charlotte's Web"

Wow! Thank you for such a huge list of books. Some of these are old favs I forgot about and some are ones I've never heard of (the Neil Gaiman one)! Some also look like books I can find fairly easily at some used bookstores. :)

I second Better World Books. Their mission statement is awesome, they're sincere, they donate books and fund literacy programs, and ship carbon-free (and do their best to be carbon-free in every area as much as possible). The also have great hiring practices.

As for books...well, oldies but goodies - the Laura Ingalls books.

Ruth Chew wrote bunch of books about magic, many of which had girls as the main character being smart and resourceful.
http://www.ruthchew.com/about-the-books/

Zilpha Keatly Snyder also wrote amazing books - my favorites were 'The Changeling' and 'Black and Blue Magic'.
http://www.zksnyder.com/alpha.html

Jane Louise Curry is good, too - 'Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Time' was a favorite.
http://www.janelouisecurry.com/

And while Beverly Cleary wrote a lot of books, my favorite was 'Socks', about a cat and his adventures in his new home, with 'grandma's' terrifying wig, and a new baby! Heh.

Let's see...as a kid, i really liked Tom Sawyer, and books about mythology, and books about horses - i was horse mad. Actually 'A Horse for XYZ' is a great book - the heroine is alone with a horse and has to be not only brave but smart and resourceful, out in the wild, evading bad guys.

Well, this is long enough I think. :) (So many of those books i got for a dollar or less from Scholastic as a kid in school. How exciting that was, to get the list of books and fill out the order form, and then the big box of books would come....!!)
