It seems like a more PC way of saying cliche to me ^_^;;

[identity profile] hezul.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm, not exactly. To borrow a quote from the TV Tropes wiki:

"Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members' minds and expectations. If a trope gets used too much, then it becomes clichéd. The word cliché means stereotyped and trite. In other words, dull and uninteresting."

I don't think those elements of storytelling are in themselves dull and uninteresting so much as they become so when poorly written.

That really seems like splitting hairs though, because one person doesn't think it's overdone they want to be nice and call it a trope or a staple while someone else will scream if they see such a thing one more time because it's cliche for them. I think it's all a matter of personal tastes which side of the fence you want to pop up on. I never said that people couldn't enjoy cliches. It would be hard to watch anime if you couldn't deal with them and I watch a lot of anime despite it...though I do stop watching a few when they drag out the more tired and boring cliches. Enough cute little orphan eps ok! ^_^;;

So I'm guessing you can't dig on a lot of Victorian Lit?

What you're bashing is actually literary tropes, things that people go to college and get degrees from examining. If you can't understand that some of these traditions are a part of media ...

[identity profile] forchancookie.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Who's bashing here? A difference of opinion is not bashing, it's a difference of opinion. I stand by my opinion. You can call it a trope if you want to, but it's cliche to me. It's my prerogative to think that and you jumping down my back isn't going to change my mind.

[identity profile] trinities.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, I'm not jumping down your back. But the fact still remains. What you're calling a cliche is the backbone of literature, things that have been prevalent since The Odyssey. I'm sorry that I felt the need to jump in and make sure you understood that. :/

[identity profile] forchancookie.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
If you come in here to tell me that I'm bashing and insinuate that I don't appreciate collegiate studies and traditional media, I'm going to A) Get insulted and B) consider you to be jumping down my back.

Call it what you will, but calling a dog a canis lupus familiaris doesn't make it any less of a dog.

[identity profile] trinities.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it comes off as if you dislike the very foundations of what makes fictional works. You dislike ... protagonists? Then how it is that you're going to continue watching anything? I'm sorry that I used the word "bash"--maybe I should have used something like "critically analyzing in a negative manner."
