Honestly curious, not defensive: what do you think of my mom who prefers SUVs because she gets nervous in a smaller car surrounded by larger ones?

That's a reason I haven't heard, but I'll add that to the list of reasons I respect. Pretty nervous driver myself, though I prefer smaller cars because I can feel the road better.

I think I mostly just judge SUVs because most people who own them don't have a reason at all or have a reason that boils down to just wanting to show off. And they really are gas guzzlers.

I get it. I don't really judge but the closest I ever got was when I had a teacher in high school who was so proud of his giant hummer. I hate those things.

All respect to your mom, but nervous drivers in giant cars aren't a great combination because being in a large car often gives people a false sense of security. Also, I *am* that nervous driver in a small car, so I tend to view people who choose to drive larger cars than they need as part of the problem, not the solution.

I know what you mean. That false sense of security can definitely be a problem. But I think it comes down to whether each individual tends to err more on the side of being too wary to the point where they get jumpy and make more mistakes than they would otherwise or on the side of being overconfident and not taking potential problems as seriously as they should if they even notice them. Some people are much less prone to feeling a false sense of security than others and may not experience it even with a confidence boost.

I'm tired and I don't know if I'm making sense.

SUVs are not necessarily safer because they're usually based on a truck chassis which lacks a number of features that reduce passenger injury in a crash compared to other vehicle types. If you want safety and size your best bet is a passenger van.
