People with big SUVs when they don't need them (small family, not an area that floods, no need to drive off road).

There's almost never a time to need an SUV. I always assume tiny penis.

I grew up in the Philippines where we started out with a car but switched to an SUV quickly after our first rainy season where the flood water sometimes was up to the car windows. That is a useful reason for an SUV.

Also they are probably useful if you do a lot of off-road driving.

Other than those reasons, though, they aren't useful. So most of the time I do judge people with them.

Well, I'm not going to lie... if you're the sort of person who does offroading for sport I'm probably also going to judge you.

If it's job related or the roads are nonexistent, I might give it a pass.

I used to think this and then my family moved to a place that was in the middle of nowhere. And given the winters here...yeah, it became a necessity.

People say things like that, but you can cross some of Africa's harshest terrains in a two wheel drive car. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2iz3sm

Call me when they cross Nunavut in a dead-of-winter snowstorm in a two wheel drive car. Preferably one that hasn't been so modded that it barely resembles the factory vehicle.

That was going to be next season too.... :(

I hope when BBC makes new-new Top Gear they keep those silly stunts.

Honestly curious, not defensive: what do you think of my mom who prefers SUVs because she gets nervous in a smaller car surrounded by larger ones?

That's a reason I haven't heard, but I'll add that to the list of reasons I respect. Pretty nervous driver myself, though I prefer smaller cars because I can feel the road better.

I think I mostly just judge SUVs because most people who own them don't have a reason at all or have a reason that boils down to just wanting to show off. And they really are gas guzzlers.

I get it. I don't really judge but the closest I ever got was when I had a teacher in high school who was so proud of his giant hummer. I hate those things.

All respect to your mom, but nervous drivers in giant cars aren't a great combination because being in a large car often gives people a false sense of security. Also, I *am* that nervous driver in a small car, so I tend to view people who choose to drive larger cars than they need as part of the problem, not the solution.

I know what you mean. That false sense of security can definitely be a problem. But I think it comes down to whether each individual tends to err more on the side of being too wary to the point where they get jumpy and make more mistakes than they would otherwise or on the side of being overconfident and not taking potential problems as seriously as they should if they even notice them. Some people are much less prone to feeling a false sense of security than others and may not experience it even with a confidence boost.

I'm tired and I don't know if I'm making sense.

SUVs are not necessarily safer because they're usually based on a truck chassis which lacks a number of features that reduce passenger injury in a crash compared to other vehicle types. If you want safety and size your best bet is a passenger van.

Unless you're going offroad, there isn't really a "need" for an SUV. People with big families got around just fine before SUVs were common, they just did it in vans or station wagons.

Like I said in another comment, I lived in the Philippines where we had monsoon rains and bad drainage and the flood waters could get up as high as the windows of a car or higher. So SUVs were actually safer. But other than that, yes.
