Image: An ad for a Blu-Ray release of the 60's version of The Prisoner.

Text: I've never been able to enjoy this show, even though it's pretty well made.

The reason is because the pilot tapped into some of my worst nightmares.

The idea of being trapped somewhere you cannot escape, unable to turn to anyone for help, freaked me out so badly that I could never get into the story.

It does get better later, but I think the show is permanently tainted for me.

BUT IT'S SUCH A GOOD SHOW THOUGH

No, I can get where you're coming from. It's weird, though, because I have similar anxieties but it never really bothered me that way - I think because there's such a surreal quality to it.

The "bad guys" annoyed the hell out of me. I stuck it out to the end at a friend's insistence, and regretted it immensely -- the final episode was light-years more annoying than the bad guys.

(I now ignore most of that friend's TV and book suggestions.)

I completely empathize with certain themes or tropes triggering anxieties. I avoid plenty of shows for that very reason.

But in this case... it's called The Prisoner, so if being trapped somewhere you can't escape is that big a squick for you, what made you think it wasn't going to touch on those themes? They give you a pretty big hint.

I watched it at my parents insistence (I was home from college, and they thought it would appeal to me and my brother), and I generally trusted their tastes. And if the story had taken place in an actual prison, I probably would have been ok with that. But having it be a nice looking village with no visible deterrents (other than Rover), and having people who appeared to be on Six's side only to betray him just...hit the wrong notes.

I think it was the "deceptively friendly but noticeably off" air of The Village that really got to me, and why I will probably never watch "The Stepford Wives" in a billion years.

Oh, man, this show. It really fed my crazy as a teenager. I love it anyway.

Crackle removed it from its playlists. :( I didn't even get halfway through the series.

Maybe go and visit Portmerion, in North Wales, it will make you feel better about it.

And it brings to mind Ayn Rand's Anthem.
