posted late last night and got missed. still curious to know.

assuming a poster or anon has never stated a gender what they say or do would make you guess theyre male or female?

Female probably. I assume most people on forums are female. I have no idea why.

Ironically, I have to remind myself that you're female, because your icon reads as "a man" to me.

I guess I am used to Tumblr where if I see someone with a male icon, I assume it is because they find him hot. And consider most people on Tumblr female. D:

I assume everyone is female unless stated otherwise and even then I tend to forget and assume female.

Context. I just assume most people on f!s are female unless otherwise stated, because the demographics are like 90% female.

Yep, this.

For me it's just an unquantifiable tone thing that's probably stereotypical and wrong. But some people just read male or female to me in ways I can't really describe.

Of course, other times it's all just text on screen and gender doesn't matter, so I don't bother thinking about it or trying to ascribe one.

The fandoms I've been in have always skewed heavily female so in general I expect the demographic of the things I get into to be the same. The number of male fanfic writers I've met I could probably count on one hand, so for better or worse I'll always tend to assume a fic writer is female regardless of content.

Of course it depends on the fandom. There are some things I'll assume appeal more to one group than the other so it'll always be a pleasantly mild surprise to realize that I'm wrong.

In my head I assume female (on F!S) but don't say so out loud until they clarify. In other places (like some blogs), the demographics are close to even so I don't assume either way unless they have a clearly gendered name (which is more likely to happen in those place than here). In still other places, I assume male in my head, but again, don't assume at all out loud. (This is mostly because I hate being misgendered which happens to me quite a bit in mostly-male spaces.)

Female.

Fandom is mostly female. Well, at least on blog or tumblr type areas. Message boards, probably skewed a little more toward male.
