...if everything comes down to the director?

I see this all the time. "Oh, they're actually a good actor. They were shit in those movies because they were directed poorly." What does it mean to be a screen actor, then? Are they just puppets?

You can criticise a performance perfectly well, and then adopt a nuanced position when it comes to who's to 'blame' for it, that reflects the certain complex sense of responsibility going on here.
