is it a kaiba/joey fic? I ship it (I like hatesex, what can I say) but I swear, that pairing has the WORST fic. even aside from the general OOC-ness that plagues most of it, it's always really annoyed me that most of them have kaiba call joey "puppy" like five million times. just...stop.

It's gotta be Kaiba/Joey. That's pretty much the most popular ship in canon/most terribly written, so it'd fit the bad + 100s of comments description.

Man, I used to ship Kaiba/Joey so hard. (Was never even that into Yu-Gi-Oh if I'm being honest, but the visual of those two worked for me?) It didn't even have to be hatesex (or stay that way, anyway), but I ate that shit up.

Looking back on it...holy shit was a lot of it OOC and awful (the puppy thing, NO), but I still think fondly of it.

(And now I'm wondering if there's actual decent fic for the pairing.)

I think there were. Off the top of my head I recall the authors WhosJeebus, Rroselavy, samurai-ashes, akaiblush, and Regann being good, and I've seen people rec Tendency and D Draggy. (I know I'm forgetting people, but I was in the fandom 10 years ago.)

ETA: Cody Nelson. Losing to Win is one of the best fics I ever read in the fandom.

(I also wrote some under the pseud of Animom which were well-received; the word "puppy" does not appear in any of them.)

You might still hate the ship, but at least those recs are skimmed from the 10%. :p

Oh and added from comment below: If you're looking for something smuttier, see if Ykarzel's fics are still up on AFF. (the_lost_ogg had some good ones there too, I think.) I recall a fic called Graffiti that was quite good (though I feel bad that I can't recall if it was Ykarzel's or ogg's). If you're interested in reading mine, they're here.

In general, two other authors in the fandom that were good (they didn't do S/J or J/S though) are SilvorMoon (who I've read) and xparrot (whose YGO fics I haven't read, but I've seen them recced often.)

No, no, I genuinely like Kaiba/Joey as a pairing! I haven't read the fic in many years, but I stand by my intrigue with them as a couple. Now most of the fic I did read was pretty awful, but I def don't think it's impossible to make them work as a pairing, just...haven't seen it done as well as I would like, you know?

I am honestly kind of excited to read these (because like I said, I think they have a lot of potential as a pairing, even if a lot of it is unfulfilled), so thanks!

Personally, I always found it much easier to make it work in a comic fic than a dramatic one (and I'm definitely not talking mangaverse here: that Kaiba was vile.) I do think that once could possibly make a case for mangaverse Yani no Yuugi and Kaiba, if only because they are both such, er, " ore-sama" types. :p

My personal headcanon for animeverse (and yes I embrace all the filler, because there was some great character development and backstory there) is that it's Jou's similarity to Mokuba (in personality) that would enable Jou to get past Kaiba's defenses (assuming Jou wanted to, which, well, I did. :p)

I just finished reading Blue Eyes and... damn, that was fucked up in an incredibly fascinating and compelling way. 8/10, would read again. Also, I am now putting everything else Cody Nelson has written on my to-read list.

Yeah ... Losing to Win, the sequel, is the one I really like, but it does make more sense in context. (I recall being really squicked by Blue Eyes when I first read it back in the day, but re-reading it a few years later I can definitely admire how skillfully she handled a very difficult topic.

(And do make sure you read / common only on the website I gave you and not on FF.net: for awhile there was a "Cody Nelson" impersonator who had swiped the real Cody's stories and posted them. (I know because I had corresponded with Cody about it.)

I hope you'll enjoy the rest of her works -- she was apparently a fairly prolific X-files writer as well (and did a few great Buffy pieces, iirc).

i still ship this (although way more lowkey) but i admit, i had written a few fics where he called him "puppy" ... i think. i don't want to look though (although i still want to write/finish this one AU i had an idea for).
