I suspect it's more due to his also inspiring Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. (The whole 'wearing human skin' thing.)

(He ALSO also inspired Norman Bates - the mother issues and dressing as a woman part...though thankfully Bloch decided Bates would stick to cross-dressing for that...)
