I'd argue the first half was pretty decent, if a bit predictable. Same goes for the beginning of Shippuden. But after Asuma dies, the story starts falling apart as the Akatsuki starts looking more and more unhinged cultish like and yeah. Not to mention the Sasuke love on the part of Kishimoto.
