Image: A poster for Spy (2015 movie)

Text:

N!S: While in my opinion this had (bear with me) poorly-executed problematic elements, and more toilet humour than I usually go for, I loved certain things and liked it overall.

S!: I came out of the cinema thinking "holy shit I want to request fic for Yuletide".

That movie has gotten surprisingly good reviews.

I was just hearing about it today. I didn't realise it was already out in time to have a secret about it posted.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's bee out for over a week in certain Asian countries and possibly Australia.

I don't like comedies. I haven't seen a comedic movie in ages. But I'm really interested in this movie.

I can totally see the Yuletide potential. I hope that Melissa McCarthy's character has some love from Jude Law and Jason Statham's characters. I don't know what's going on with them but I want them to be a cute threesome.

And I liked the premise of the nerdy IT girl getting her chance to live her dream and be a spy. I hope the movie does well on this front.

I hope that Melissa McCarthy's character has some love from Jude Law and Jason Statham's characters.

I was hoping for this too, but I heard they mostly insult her. (Sounds like the insulting goes every which way, but I wanted something a bit more...pleasant and actiony.)

I want to be wrong though. (Anyone else have an opinion?)

I've seen it and... you might like what happens in the film. You should give it a go.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
PS: The movie is VERY actiony and the best barbs are traded between McCarthy and Rose Byrne anyway.

I like Melissa, so I'm happy this film is getting good reviews, I was just kind of disappointed to hear her character was constantly being put down. (It isn't new, but... Still not fond.)

It sounds like she gives back as good as she gets, so maybe that's a saving grace. The action stuff does sound nice, and you're giving me hope that it isn't entirely impossible to ship her.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
The movie kind of encourages it in a certain way but... you might also end up going the other way and shipping her with Byrne's character, like I did :D

The one who compares her character to her mother? Lmao, I'm curious as to where their relationship goes now.

I was really surprised by how brutal the violence and gore was in this movie!

I also came out of it shipping her and Angry Jason Statham Guy so I was happy about that cutscene at the end. Get it girl!

OP (vague spoilers)

I love how, as Peter Serafinowicz said in an interview, it was directed as a regular action movie, except everyone's an idiot. So it works as both genres. Spy comedies are my guilty pleasure: I loved the Get Smart movie (haven't gotten around to the series yet but will someday), and I appreciate Johnny English and Austin Powers (though like I said I can only take so much toilet humour before it's cloying).

I also came out of the theatre as a multi-shipper, but that's definitely one ship! That and the "Clean Jerk" mission during the credits where she had to rescue him! And I just want more of them together in general. Jason Statham should do more comedies.

And as mentioned above, her and Rose Byrne's character. And Serafinowicz' character (oh that ending scene). And even a resolution with you-know-who. I loved where the canon went with it but that's what fic's for! And while we're at it, maybe an explanation for Ford claiming "he was my friend, too!"

Also, Nancy (Miranda Hart). I get that maybe she wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but it was so refreshing for me to see her in a movie like this.

Who knew Jason Statham could be funny? I laughed my ass off during his various monologues.

I'm the last OP who's on way late, but I'm gonna chime in with yes. I did not expect to ship her with Jason Statham (I don't ever expect to ship Jason Statham with anyone, I don't really watch his films and I'm not attracted to him much at all, but yeah. I loved the cut scene at the end, and like OP, I loved the Clean Jerk mission in the credits.)

So, yes.

(Also, OP, if you read this: I appreciate the cut of your jib. You have an interesting array of ships assembled in that list. Good on you. :D)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, this is the second time someone replied to a secret of mine saying they liked the cut of my jib, though the previous one wasn't about ships :)

Here's to all sorts of fic! And if nothing surfaces, I might just take it into my own hands.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
Same, OP.

I came out with way more shippier feelings than I ever expected.
