If I had access to the TARDIS, the first thing I would do is travel to Victorian England and give Gerard Manley Hopkins a hug.

He was a Jesuit monk, so he probably wouldn’t want a hug.
I don’t care.

One assumes it would be a Manley hug ;)

Best use of the TARDIS evar.

I think he would be okay with it. He would be weirded out at first but then he'd lean into it. That's my Gerard Manley Hopkins opinion.

(Also, that's a really good agenda to have, and it makes me think that you're cool)

This is a perfectly reasonable time-travel agenda, and I like to think GMH would appreciate the hug.

When I was in eleventh-grade English class, we broke into small groups to do reports on authors and poets that we drew out of a hat. Our group got Gerard Manley Hopkins, and I hadn't heard of him before and I haven't heard his name mentioned since. Until today. Heh.

Somehow I've read a bunch of his poetry but never realised he was actually a monk, instead of just religious. But yes. GMH should be hugged.

I love both Gerald Manley Hopkins and this secret. I think that he'd appreciate the thought for sure.

HE WASN"T A MONK

Jesuits aren't a monastic order. He was a priest.

I don't actually care but this has been your nitpicky Catholic history fact of the day.

Actually (although GMH was a priest) the Jesuit order contains both priests and brothers.

HA! I have out-nitpicked you!

Are Jesuit brothers even called monks, though, or just "religious"? Since the Society of Jesus is an "apostolic" rather than "monastic" order, are they "apostles"?

Hopkins seems to have chosen to be a Jesuit scholastic as a way to choose an ascetic life, so I guess "monk" is an acceptable shorthand for people who don't know the difference?

He both needed and deserved hugs, so i love this secret.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I too, have frequently wanted to just go "oh YOU" and give him a massive hug while reading his poetry or - especially - when reading the journals & letters. Brilliant, crazy, in-scape seeking man. And I think he'd probably not even be adverse to a good ol' platonic comforting hug.

I think we've all got a historical figure we feel like this about.
