Of course we know whether Peggy is okay with it. It's called WRITING FICTION. You write her how you want to write her, and people will agree or disagree with your artistic decision. But Peggy Carter is a character, not a person, and she can't be misinterpreted, offended, or misrepresented.

I think, in OP's defense, that their reaction is kind of a natural reaction to being down in the trenches of fandom arguments on tumblr or whatever.

Whether or not those arguments are a good thing to take part in IDK

It's just frustrating to me when I say that I'm uncomfortable with Sharon/Peggy, I've literally had people tell me there's no reason for me to feel this way because Peggy supports them together and wouldn't want Steve to be sad and alone.

Which is annoying because while I'm sure Peggy wants Steve to be happy, that doesn't necessarily mean she'd approve of Sharon/Steve (she might, of course, but we don't know either way).

And so Hayley's tweets are nice because it's a real easy way for me to say, "Hey, not approving of Steve/Sharon isn't just MY issue. Peggy's actress herself doesn't approve."

I just get tired of people telling me that Peggy would be okay with it. There's no evidence either way in canon.

Sure, but canon doesn't matter in shipping either.

It matters to a lot of people.

A lot of people think the Apollo program was faked from a soundstage. A lot of people think Columbus proved the Earth was round. A lot of people think their farts smell good.

Are you mad that some creator's work jossed your fanon opinion or something?

ngl, I kinda get that impression too.

No, I have an objection to stupid ways of approaching a text, whether it be a comic book, a TV show, or religious scripture. Basically the call is to grow the fuck up and stop interpreting works in ways that would have been embarrassingly naive in any century.

No way, this is a user who takes fiction extremely seriously and as something to be analyzed. I doubt he even has headcanons.

Of course I do, at least two of them to start with, as many as a dozen for really interesting works.

And while Hayley isn't Peggy (obviously), having her say she doesn't approve helps me to point out that it's not just ME that has an issue with it. It's not my particular hangup.

And that people shouldn't just presume that Peggy would be okay with it when she might not be.

I think canon does matter in shipping, canon matters because one's shipping choice is based on how canon depicts the characters - this is true for non-canon ships as well.

It's not about fanfic.

It's about the fact that when I've expressed discomfort with the idea of Sharon/Steve being canon, I've repeatedly had people tell me that Peggy would approve. And we don't know either way.

As long as you're arguing that we don't know either way, and not that it's basically definitely incest (but it's okay if that's what you're into) (but it's definitely basically incest and squicky) (but some people like squick!)

It comes across as incest by proxy to me (NOT actual incest obviously) which is why it makes me uncomfortable, but I in no way think that everyone has to feel that way. Obviously a lot of people have no issue with it and that's a 100% legitimate opinion.

The thing is, Peggy MIGHT disapprove for similar reasons to me (she might not be okay with Steve dating one of her relatives). Or she might be 100% happy for them. We don't know.

I just get tired of being told that OF COURSE she'd be fine with it. We don't know either way.

Sure, it's possible to write Peggy in a way that's inconsistent with how Peggy was written by ____ for _____. Whether that's a good thing, a bad thing, or just a thing depends entirely on perspective since no one in the MCU is writing her exactly the same way as, say Lee and Kirby. The industry, for better or for worse, is built on periodic reinterpretations of characters.

Well, yes. But if you are writing an MCU fic and the MCU version of Peggy, then there are things that are in character and things that are out of character. There is certainly a wide range, but there are outer limits.

Sure, writing her as fighting in a playboy bunny suit would be a major breach, but we're not really talking about that, are we.

But that's a matter of bad taste, not a violation of some nonexistent objective standard of what a Peggy Carter is.
