about your current life and career goals

I'm sure that my mother wishes I was more ambitious and had more definite direction in my career. But other than that, basically fine.

I don't really give a shit what my dad thinks - I mean, I love him, but (A) he can be a judgmental ass and (B) he was way more of a drunken layabout for most of his life, so fuck him.

My mother just wants me to not wind up living in her garage. I don't know what my father thinks.

My mom is proud and always interested in whatever I'm doing.

My dad texted me this on wednesday "I'm a very proud daddy" in response to me telling him about work.

They're pretty happy and proud no matter what I do as long as I'm happy and not doing anything illegal.

Well, except for the mining internship I did many years back. Heavy hints were dropped that they'd be frowny.

Your parents sound pretty legit.

My relationship with them has been pretty steady, ups and downs but nothing major. Even coming out was an anticlimatic "oh we knew" lol.
The honor of drama goes to 3 of my siblings :C it's not their fault though, mental disabilities put a strain on things.

They're kind of weird about it - normally, they'd be happy I was going into the professional, scientific (yes, it's a science!!) field of psychology, but ever since I was diagnosed with a few mental illnesses of my own last year, they've gone from doubtful-in-case-it-triggers-me to disapproval. idrc though. I'm not even into abnormal psychology! And even if I was, I studied psychology for two years in college and I loved every moment of it!

What area of psychology are you going into? Just curious. Like research based or more clinical?

Developmental psychology, research. I have a few years' experience teaching children in preschool and primary school and I loved it so much, I want to study them.

They're both super proud and supportive, but at the same time confused and have no idea what I'm on about. I'm pursuing a PhD in a family full of GEDs, so it's less a lack of support and more just not quite getting it.

I'm the one who didn't get arrested, didn't drop out of high school, and has yet to throw away a promising career because my boss was slightly obnoxious. They can't really complain about me. My mom recently said that the only thing she wants now for me is to find a nice husband.

But they have really unrealistic expectations of how much money I'm going to make. My dad always "jokes" about how I'll be making millions of dollars...that's not gonna happen in the field I chose.

But he won't let it go...

They are pretty proud that I'm going to be a lawyer. However, my dad makes these comments all the time about how I should pick a more lucrative area of law so that they can live with me when they retire or so I can redo their will or any of a number of various reasons. I'm pretty sure they are mostly jokes, but I worry sometimes that there may be a kernel of truth in there.

Career wise, my dad is so ecstatic I went into engineering and calls me up about my job all the time.

I don't know about my dad--haven't seen him since I was ten.

My mom's fine with my career. She's glad I have a steady, stable job and make enough to live comfortably. But when it comes to my actual life, she's never happy. She hates my hobbies, she hates my clothes, she hates my friends. But mostly she hates that I'm fat and therefore will never be good enough for her. She pretends it's ~because of my health~ but it's not. It's sheer disgust that I took more after my father's side than hers physically. When I lived at home, it got to the point where I'd be eating only one sandwich a day and she'd be making pig noises that me for having that sandwich. To this day, if she visits me, she'll follow me into the kitchen if I so much as want a glass of water. Just to make sure I'm not ~stuffing my face~ or something.

So, according to her, despite being happy with my job, I'm a giant failure because I'm fat. That's how my mom feels.

What the fuck

Sure is abusive moms in here today. I'm so sorry.

They are really fucking disappointed.

But my mom is proud that I didn't end up barefoot and pregnant like all the cousins on my dad's side. She's only proud of the shit I didn't get into. But I have no career, just a history of shitty jobs. I was supposed to turn out better. Sorry mom.

My dad just wanted me to marry a guns-and-cars kind of guy so he could get a son-in-law in lieu of actual son. Sorry dad, I like smart computer nerds. And girls.

Nothing. Not that i get any response from them of the matter.

They feel pretty good about it, I think. They seem to think I should get paid more (salaries just aren't very high in my field) and own a house by now, but otherwise they approve. My mom wants me to be popping out grandchildren, though.

They're proud and supportive, which baffles me because I haven't achieved anything for them to be proud of.
