Dead Money is buggy as hell, and even when working as intended, the collars are a bit frustrating, but, IMO, it's got one of the best stories out of all the DLCs and has two of the best companions in the game (either vanilla or DLC) - Christine and Dog/God. If not for the bugs, it would be, IMO, the second best DLC, behind Lonesome Road and just slightly ahead of Old World Blues. (And would be up there with Lonesome Road if the DLCs were integrated a little more seamlessly with vanilla...but explaining why would be seriously spoily.) Honest Hearts on the other hand was...a bunch of fetch quests, in a not terribly interesting landscape, for people I didn't really care about (aside from two who really only showed up at 2 points in the storyline).

Re: that one killer bug: To be nonspoilery, there's one circumstance you can die that's unique to the DLC. (Actually, there are several, but the bug only comes into play for one of them.) In the circumstance that a walkthru can protect you, you get a grace period to get out of the area before you die... But if the bug hits, the announcement that you're under the circumstances that are going to kill you refuses to be dismissed...and unfortunately whatever causes the issue can't be fixed by a reload. (I learned that the hard way.) So, if you get it and haven't got to the point you can do this part without killing, you're forced to reload before you've entered the Sierra Madre at all (so make sure to keep a pre-entrance save). (Or to use console commands, which I did...and then I had to use them again, because using the console meant certain flags didn't trip, which screwed up later stuff.)

Spoilery version: [Part of the premise of the DLC is you're stuck with an explosive collar that means that whichever companion you're with at the time dies, so do you. Eventually, it's revealed that one of your companions, Dean Domino, is a scuzzbag, and tries to kill you, unless you've chosen the right dialogue options to get him on your side (which is hard to do without a walkthru, he's a real asshole). Usually, you then grab some items you need to proceed and run out of the room before your collar pops (or run, then come back and grab the items). If, however, the bug has been triggered, a 'DEAN DOMINO HAS DIED!' message pops up and refuses to be dismissed.]

Okay, I know this wasn't your intention, but you've convinced me to try Dead Money much, much later, after I finish absolutely everything else including the end-game. It sounds like an interesting premise (if a frustrating one for gameplay reasons) but since I'm playing on console (and can't tinker with anything), I don't want to have to worry about this bug. When exactly does it occur in the DLC? (I'm assuming near the end? And the DLC is probably around five hours, right? That's...a hell of a long time to replay. If I could reload thirty minutes before and fix it then okay, but restarting altogether? Not today Satan, not today.)

IDK, I might even end up watching a playthrough before (or instead of) playing it myself. I DO want to check it out for the story (as it sounds neat, and having an asshole companion would be something different), but it doesn't sound too fun to actually play (because of, like you said, the bugs).

It's...well, about midway storywise. Chances are it'll be about 1/3 of the way through in actual gameplay terms - the format discourages early exploration, so unless you're dashing through as quick as possible, the first half of the story will probably move faster than the second half. Been too long since I played it to really say how long that took, though.

On the other hand, checking, that bug apparently only happens on PC, so if you're on a console, it shouldn't actually be an issue. The DLC's still remarkably buggy, but none of them are game-breakers, at least according to the FO wiki.

You've been very helpful, thanks! I did look at the FO wiki and it doesn't seem like the 360 version has that many bugs that aren't connected to downloading or internet stuff, and while I'm a bit skeptical something horrible won't happen when I play, I will still give it a shot. Still probably going to wait just in case, but it doesn't sound like the bugs are as severe on 360.
