Ugly surnames

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
What are the worst you know?

In English:

Butt/Butts
Dick
Kuntz - a German surname that sucks in an English-speaking context.
Coward - I know, it comes from "cow herd." But it still sucks with this spelling.
Cox
Gay - good luck in elementary school.
Beaton - homophone of beaten, as in you're going to get beaten up for your ugly name.
Cockburn - yeah, it sounds okay, but it looks like something you should see the doctor about.
Tucker - Tucker Tucker bo bucker, fee fi fo....
Longbottom - LOL
Smith/Jones/Johnson - your ancestors weren't very creative, being smiths and being named John, were they?

I don't trust anyone with the last name Snyder (or Schneider or any other variation/spelling). It sounds like snide and spider (and cider - I hate cider), so I always think anyone with that name is mean and sneaky.

It's the German equivalent to "Taylor." Snyder, etc. are Anglicized variants of it.

It DOES sound sneaky and snide, though.

(it's occurred to me that schneider literally means "someone who cuts" and "cutting" can be a term for snide, mean, etc.)

No really, there was a girl in my middle school with that surname.

Now I'm wondering if there's someone on this planet with the unfortunate name "Gaylord Cockburn".

Cobbledick. The first time I saw it written out I thought it said "Gobbledick" and I had to excuse myself so I didn't laugh in front of the poor, poor girl.

In Japanese, the character 尻 (shiri, "butt") crops up in a few surnames. The creator of Pokémon, for example, has the last name 田尻 (Tajiri, "field butt"). My personal favorite has to be 沢尻 (Sawajiri, "swamp butt").

Hooker and Horman. Both were my friends in highschool, And their names were side by side on every list. Hooker was female, Horman was male.
