It is hard to get these challenges off the ground these days, with their being no central websites or communities for most fandoms in which to actively promote. Plus you have to commission (or draw) some artwork for prizes and promotions and set up a half decent website to promote the challenge. It can be done, but it would be damn hard work to do now.

Don't get me wrong, I don't doubt that fact, but...in most of these cases no one else will do it, so if you want it you either have to do it yourself, or be disappointed.

Which is unfortunate, but...it happens.

I imagine it IS a ton of work especially now that people are flocking to communities. Maybe you could make an LJ comm for the challenge and advertise it on twitter and tumblr, but there's never any guarantee that people will see it or participate. (Even then there are additional layers of work that would need to go into it, so I don't blame anyone for not trying. I wouldn't, because I know I'm not suitable to run it.)

It's not that hard to get a fandom challenge off the ground, even these days. The secret is to promote it on tumblr, but hold all the actual FAQ posts and news bulletins on LJ or DW where it's a lot easier to have comment threads where many people can join in.

I don't know why there's this myth floating about. I believed it myself until I started to help out in a fic challenge. If anything, they're more popular than ever these days.
