The guts of an animal (humans included) are usually the first to start decomposing, and that process creates gas. It's why dead bodies in the water eventually float up to the top unless they've been weighted down. So when they were cutting apart the whale for disposal, the person doing it hit a gas pocket and the results were explosive.
