Fantasy/Sci-fi with gay characters?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-06 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Preferably gay protagonists. Are there any good ones?

(I admit I do enjoy slash/BL tropes, but a lot of "fanfic" style original gay fiction has been unsurprisingly really terrible in my experience)

Try some Mercedes Lackey books, she tends to have gay characters in them.

Lois McMaster Bujold's "Ethan of Athos".

Mercedes Lackey: Magic's Pawn, Magic's Promise and Magic's Price

ayrt

I decided to give the Mercedes Lackey one a shot!! And... I spent like forty minutes trying to figure out how to actually get the ebook of it. I'm an American with an American kindle, but I live in the UK, where apparently there is no Kindle version. But I went on Amazon.com for the American website, fully ready to pay with an American credit card, and it still thought I was in the UK. Eventually figured out how to change my settings on my Amazon Kindle management page, and could finally buy it. Because I had to work so hard to get this book (Magic's Pawn) I am sure I will love it.

I just mentioned them above, but Shira Glassman's Mangoverse series has just about any underrepresented identity you can think of. She wrote them to contain everything she wanted to see in a fantasy series but never got, plus some stuff she loves that you do see a lot, like dragons and mysteries. These books make me so happy.

Disclaimer: she's a friend of mine so I might be biased.

Time Waits by C. B. Lewis is a time travel adventure story about a Hungarian soldier in WWII and a British historian from the future who fall for each other.

The Mangoverse has been mentioned.
Ancillary Justice and Ancillary Sword.
About half of Slonczewsky's Elysium cycle (plus Highest Frontier).
Mandelo's Beyond Binary anthology is worth a look, although the stories are a bit uneven. I keep plugging Terra Nova as well although it's not an LGBT-focused anthology. The Lightspeed special issue, "queers destroy science fiction" should be available in the next month.

Also Jemisin's Inheritance Trilogy, and I've just started Kameron Hurley's Worldbreaker although it's a bit tough to get into. Many characters in Ian Banks' Culture series are bisexual, although I'm still on the fence regarding bisexuality in The Culture.

Doctrine of Labyrinths comes to mind, as does Palimpsest (by Valente, not Stross.) I didn't like either, to be honest, but they're there.
