I'm not quite sure how to phrase this. As a western european with a christian background, I wouldn't feel comfortable writing about another culture or religion. The only time I would is if the fandom or character I was writing for was from that culture, or was linked to another religion. And only then would I write something after tonnes of research and a beta who could correct any mistakes.

I guess this sounds anal, but I just don't think you can capture the nuance of another culture or religion without some input from someone 'on the inside' as it were. It may read okay to other westerners, but it might offend someone who was actually of that culture or religion.

You can get a taste of it in some Japanese anime/manga when they have stories set in Europe or America. It's sometimes not quite... right. Especially the Christian elements. (Not that I'm offended by it, but someone might be.)

SA Please note, not intending to imply everyone in the West is Christian. I'm bloody tired, and haven't managed to phrase this^ as well as I'd like. Please just assume not out to offend anyone here, and all the usual Tumblr-required disclaimers apply.

It wasn't that you implied anything, it's just that a lot of Christmas exchanges ask for Christmas themed fics.

da

Ohhh wait, are you talking about fix exchanges where the theme is actually Christmas? I thought you were just talking about the usual "gift exchanges" or whatever. Or maybe those are supposed to be Christmas themed fics, I have no idea, I've never participated.
