If you're wary about it being 9 books, the first three or so books are absolutely self-contained and don't require any wrapping-up from the last half of the series, or even really needing to be read in the 'correct' order. 4 and 5 play off each other, as do 8 and 9, but the other ones are also pretty stand-alone as long as you've read in the right order.
