Really? He made the world around him significantly safer, he was remarkably fair, and none of the people he had killed could be said to be innocent.

Made the world around him a better place for who? Not for the women he trafficked as prostitutes. Not for the business owners he extorted for protection money. How exactly do you think the mob gets rich? It's not just by killing their conveniently-evil rivals. Sure he had some morals, about drugs, but having morals about some things doesn't erase moral indifference in other things.

Just because someone else is or could be worse does not make the first one good. If the question is "Is Vito Corleone a good man?", the argument that he's not as bad as someone else still does not make him good.
