I know nothing about this other than that Slate post about how everyone should bet on every horse but American Pharaoh. So it is amusing to me that this horse won.

Specifically, the horse won the Triple Crown, which means he won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes (the most recent race, which happened today.) This is very rare (he's the first one to win it since 1978, the 12th overall) and kind of an achievement for the sport. A lot of people believed it couldn't be done anymore.

man I have been hoping for a Crown winner for years, and then a few years ago I stopped paying attention.

I'm excited on behalf of my mom, though, who is an avid race fan!

I'm the same, my grandparents were really into going to the tracks and took my mom as a kid a few times. I don't think she's ever been to Belmont for the Belmont Stakes, but she's been for some of their other races. It's pretty exciting because this is the first year I really sat down to watch all of them.

It is interesting how the demographics have changed. My grandfather was a huge fan of the races, it was his main entertainment; I've only been to the track 2 or 3 times. That's the change over the generations.

My mom said her parents used to travel all over for a weekend trips to go to the races, she joined them a couple times when she was a kid, but by the time I came around, my grandparents had stopped going and mom just never took us.

One of these days, I feel like I should go. I almost went to the big one in South Carolina once, but then it rained and I wasn't stand in a field drinking and being generally miserable.

Apparently, the horse's name is spelled "Pharoah" and good spellers are grumpy over it.
