It's fucking bizarre though. So often you'll see someone claim to love a show for its complex, nuanced characters, but then that same person will take those characters and reduce them to caricatures with personalities that can be explained in a single sentence. Like, shit, what do you actually want here? I don't get it.

I suspect they want to be seen as enjoying something intelligently for its literary/narrative/storytelling/representative etc. quality, but in reality just want cardboard-cutout generic woobies to mash together for smut fics.

I've seen people do it as some kind of "see how morally superior I am for liking the right characters" thing.

i think it happens the most in big fandoms with BNF or really AU fandoms where the character gains a "accepted fanon interpretation" that makes people forget about the actual story.
