Oh definitely. I'm lucky that mine is not only well run, with a lot of varied programming, but that it attracts all types too since it serves as a spot with connections to near every group and business in the city. My biggest reason for volunteering was to meet and talk to more people from all walks of life. Otoh, I know folk who don't enjoy the atmosphere of such places, and also don't feel the need to use them. Same with uni clubs, or recreation groups (those don't tend to act as confessional though, as they're more social).

Tbf, I had to quit volunteering once the duties changed.
