(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)It's probably my inexperience with Max as a character that has me saying that, then. I haven't seen the other movies, had no interest until a friend told me to see this one and I agreed based on my utter love of the post apocalypse genre.
But I did like that he left after returning Furiosa and the Wives to their place of belonging. Leaves plenty of room for a sequel, and if that doesn't happen, fandom can explore it to their own content.

And, yeah, Max leaving when all is said and done is how his movies always end. He never sticks around no matter who he leaves behind. If he had stayed that would have been completely out of character.

Short version: Max had a wife and child. When things started going bad... they didn't make it (by which I mean violent and unfortunate ends). Max has very deliberately avoided cultivating any relationships where he gets too close to anybody since. He's a little more unhinged about it in MM:FR, but it's nothing new.
