I had a similar thing with a guy who is now one of my best friends. We were in the same department in uni, and for the first year of our acquaintance everybody else invested themselves in keeping us from each other's throats. But somehow by the end of the year we became great friends and have been great friends ever since.

But that's pretty rare for me, and also it took quite a while.
