Re: How about popular opinions?

Well, I don't know whether those opinions are popular or not, but I don't think that I do agree with you. (nb: I do not have a ton of familiarity with philosophy of mind so forgive me if any of this is unfocused or scattershot).

To the first paragraph: I don't think that any of those points are really ill-taken and I don't see how they're failing to address the fundamental problem of death. It seems to me that they would largely agree that People Die When They Are Killed, and are basically challenging how we should understand "people" and "die". And, although most of the time that's not at all a meaningful distinction, it is relevant in this specific hypothetical - because I think the hypothetical existence of this teleporter changes what are the relevant facts of the situation. I don't think the conclusion that they reach is necessarily wrong, either.

To the second paragraph: I'm not familiar with Ryle's thought (although perhaps I should be more so!). But:

suppose you were to undergo immensely painful therapy with no anesthetic. In its place, you would have a drug that completely paralyzes you (preventing you from outwardly showing a pain response) and a drug that prevents you from forming new memories (so you would be unable to recall the experience afterwards.) if you agree with Ryle's ideas, you should have no problem agreeing to the surgery.

I can honestly say that I would have no problem undergoing the surgery given those conditions (provided it was reasonable to take it as undoubtable fact that, you know, all of these things work as described and are risk-free and all that kind of thing). And in fact that conclusion seems pretty much intuitively right.

May I ask you to explain a little more about your intuition in the second case?

Ummm. I guess I'd say that I look at the situation and try to figure out where it harms me, and I can't see it. Pain's just pain. I'm not saying that it's the same as anesthesia, but from a certain point of view the effect is comparable.

That actually makes sense to me. (Painful, painful sense.) Thanks!
