If you had to personally kill your meat, realistically, do you think you'd still eat it?

Not a pro-PETA question or anything, just genuinely curious if you think you could do it. No, you aren't on a desert island. You have the same life you do now. You would just have to personally kill the cow, the chicken, whatever, every time you wanted to eat that.

Re: A different kind of Ask thread

(Anonymous) 2015-06-07 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but that's one of the reasons I don't eat it.

Nope, but I'm already vegetarian. When I was a child, my dad, who took me fishing one day, wanted me to learn how to kill/gut the fish when we got back. I'd always been soft for animals but still ate meat, so he tried to reason with me that if you eat meat, you have to really understand what it is. I think he was trying to make me develop a respect for food and animals for their sacrifice. He did not expect that I'd just throw my hands up and become a vegetarian. lol

He wasn't wrong, and honestly I'm not ethically opposed to eating meat and I'm vegetarian for environmental reasons and anti-factory farming, but I don't think I could kill an animal myself unless I was starving/otherwise desperate.

I've killed animals before, so yes.

Same. Where I grew up it was the norm to hunt during the winter and fish in the spring and summer months. My community was rural and poor, so you either did that or you went hungry.

Yep.

Although I'd probably eat less meat than I do now, but that's just laziness.

Have done. No qualms. I'd probably eat LESS meat, but for the practical reason of just not wanting to go through all that trouble (assuming I'm also responsible for dressing the carcass) on a regular basis, not for moral reasons.

Actually, if you worded this how you meant it, and I have to kill a cow every time I want a steak, I'd eat less red meat and pork just because I can't abide that much waste, but I couldn't eat a whole damn cow or pig in one sitting.

Don't eat much meat in the first place, but yes.

If I had qualms about it at all, it'd be because of the mess. I might do it less purely because it's gross, but not for any moral reason.

So I can have meat only if I kill an animal myself? Fish, yes. I don't know about the animals, not sure.

Yes. I'm okay with hunting strictly for food. Don't want to, but I would if I had do. I just have a problem with hunting for sport or with using animals for anything that isn't something people need to live (like, medical testing okay, cosmetic testing not).

It's not really whether or not you are theoretically okay with killing animals for food, but rather if you think you yourself would be comfortable ending an animal's life. Especially if you aren't in a situation where you "have to" - you have as much access to non-meat foods as now. So it's if you felt like eating meat, you'd have to kill an animal, do you think you could still do it.

Yes, though I think I'd eat less of it.

And I'd probably wouldn't kill big things like cows (looks messy, and just too much for one person), so I'd likely stick to poultry and fish, which is now my main source of protein anyway.

Yeah, sure.

Would get easier with practice, I have to talk myself up just to catch a fish and kill it cause I'm squeamish but yeah.

Never done anything larger than a chicken though so I better look up the quickest, most painless ways. Also a cow might be a bit much, my fridge ain't that big and I hate being wasteful.

Sure I guess. If someone taught me human killing techniques. I wouldn't want to go hacking away at something and make it suffer for no reason. I've killed and cooked fish that I've caught before.

Does killing include prep work? Because I could do the actual killing portion, but the rest of the prep would be too much effort.

I would if I were really hungry and I had no other options but otherwise no. (Assuming the animal is healthy and not in pain or something where it would be better to kill it.)

I have no problem with people eating meat, or even with humanely killing animals, but the idea of killing one myself does not appeal to me at all.
