Re: Religion?

Ex-religious, and this is a very good question.

Genuine proof is the only thing that could make me go back. Incontrovertible proof that there is a God and he actually would prefer it if we actually did jump through a particular set of hoops which has already been laid out in one of the major texts. Not someone claiming to speak on his behalf, not someone claiming this, that, or the other emotion is a substitute for proof, real proof.

I have rejected the christian faith because the modern church has put too much reliance on emotional manipulation to try to explain god. Everything is feelings. If you don't feel the right things it means you're not doing the right things, or aren't "close enough" to God, and it couldn't possibly be due to medical problems, chemical imbalance in the brain, hormonal challenges, poor coping skills, trauma, etc. Everything is about intangible feelings which can too easily be manipulated, both positively and negatively. Moreover, the entirety of the universe just doesn't make sense if any one of the major religions is actually correct.

I'm okay with the overall concept or theory that there may be a "god" which exists on a plane of existence that cannot cross into the physical 3 or even 4-dimensional space in which we exist, something we don't know of and can't know for ourselves, like intersecting parallel universes or dark matter/energy. But if that is even remotely possible, then no religion devised by men on earth can be right. None of the rituals will bring about effects, prayer will not be answered, and belief is rendered pointless. In that case, the only positive behind any religion would be the placebo effect, or a catharsis delivered to people who do feel comfortable with the idea of a god they can talk to. But the negatives - the shaming of "sinners," the religious wars, the enacting of laws to curb rights based on one religion's views of what God wants - far outweigh the positives.

I could go on and on about it but that's the short answer.
