I've never heard a definition of junior high that didn't include 7th grade. Maybe that's a regional thing. In the US as far as I know junior high is either 7th-9th (which I think is the original definition? because I don't think many schools anymore have that grade range though; afaik 9th grade is high school everywhere in the US) or synonymous with middle school, which means 6th-8th.

I'd disagree with anon slightly, though, I don't think the average age for a 6th grade is 11, I think the average age is 11.5 since the vast majority of people turn 12 either right before, right after, or sometime during their 6th grade years.

Well I'm Canadian, so...

Also so is OP, so we were both like "wat" as soon as junior high was mentioned.

Ahh okay. Someone had already told me the same thing upthread so I miread the intent of your comment and I was like, "But does she realize I'm not American*?"


*okay, technically I am American because dual citizenship, but I grew up in and was educated in Canada. Didn't spend much time in the USA until my 20's.
