Re: TRAVEL THREAD
(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)From Rygge the easiest way to get into Oslo is by the airport bus, as the airport is a bit further out from Oslo, yeah. You can also get the train from there, but that involves getting on a (free) shuttle bus in to Moss, where the train leave from. More info on that here:

There's no bad areas where you will get like murdered or anything, but there are some areas where there are a fair amount of prostitutes and drug addicts. But nothing dangerous really, just a bit unpleasant! That is mostly around the streets Tollbugata, Skippergata and Prinsensgate, or at least that's my impression (I know there is one hostel at least that is located right in the middle of this, which is really why I asked where you were staying). That area is not too far away from where your hostel is located, but I think it should be far enough away for that to be an issue. The area around the central station and the lower part of Karl Johans gate (the street leading up to the royal castle from the central station) too have an issue with drug addicts, but like I said, it's more unpleasant than dangerous. You will most likely also see (and be approached by) beggars, for the most part Romani, but if they approach you just say no and they'll go to the next person for the most part. The only area I would really say stay out of is Slottsparken (the park behind the royal castle) at night, especially if you go alone and are female. There has been both a lot of rapes and muggings here, though it might have become better now. I would still advice you to stay away at night though. Other than that it's just common things like, keep a watch out for your purse in areas where there are a lot of people to avoid pickpockets and such. Oslo really is a safe city though, so I wouldn't worry too much!
Also I see your hostel is located near the fortress, Akershus festning. I would recommend seeing that at least, and it's free access to the fortress itself! To enter the castle inside of it there is a fee I think, but I believe that was free if you get the Oslo Pass.
Then just a little something for the camping part of the trip, if you have to shop groceries there are some stores that are cheaper than others, like "Kiwi" or "Rema 1000". They can be a lot cheaper than some others, like "Meny" or "Ica". The selection of goods are usually not as good in the cheaper ones, but it's not bad either.
Oh, and you can also check out the Oslo subreddit. People there are quite good at giving advice on what to do and see when in Oslo.

That's all I've got for now! I forgot to say it in the last comment, but I hope you'll have a super good trip and that you'll enjoy Norway!
