Re: To sort of go along with another thread I just started
All the food we ate at restaurants was mediocre at best. I didn't have any home-cooked food. The fresh fruit was delicious but fresh tropical fruit is delicious everywhere.
Are you Hawai'ian?
Re: To sort of go along with another thread I just started
But nah, I was half joking/half serious.
Although I also remembered after I posted that food tourists tend to eat != food locals tend to eat. My extended family sometimes visited and my parents would drag us out to luaus and the food would always be massive buffet stuff and mostly just so-so.
Hawaiian food to me is manapuas, li hing mui from crack seed stores, malasadas fresh from a Leonard's truck, curry houses (MY GOD ARE THEY HARD TO FIND ON THE MAINLAND), freshly made peanut butter mochi that goes bad in two days because there are no preservatives whatsoever, properly ground shave ice, mochiko chicken...
The list goes on and on.
Re: To sort of go along with another thread I just started
(Note: I was 16 when I was there, and I my folks were calling all the shots. Not sure how different an experience I'd have if I were doing it on my own. Are there places where people can find good, well-made Hawai'ian fare, or is it mostly homemade?)
