I thought a lot of his scenes were funny, but at the same time I was a little disturbed like you. He clearly had some actual issues that needed to be addressed and their severity is especially noticeable when you compare Eric in later seasons to Eric in the earliest seasons. I mean, I know that it's a sitcom and everything and that he probably wasn't intended to be interpreted as actually mentally unstable and that I'm taking it too seriously, but I couldn't help but feel sorry for him

Yeah, you are overreacting. Eric was and is fine. He is just eccentric. Not psychotically insane. He even wound up becoming a mayor in an obscure town because people trusted his sound judgment.

Well, I don't know. As someone who was at least eccentric and later was diagnosed as mentally ill, I really identified with Eric (far more than with Topanga, Shawn, and Cory), and the way people treated him and the opportunities he got gave me hope.

Also, he's basically a Disney sitcom character, so he's played a little over-broadly anyway.

Eric is my favorite BMW character, but only in the later seasons. I loved his eccentricity, his big heart, and his wacky antics. I liked him because he wasn't afraid to be himself, yet at the same time, he knew he was an imperfect person. Like, in the one episode where he gives away the school store's earnings to an organ grinder and Jack lays into him, he starts to doubt himself and he's actually able to be somewhat 'normal', but Mr. Feeny talks to Jack about how they can actually help each other because of Jack's intellect and Eric's good heart. Eric could have acted more normal, more conventional, but he wasn't afraid to be silly.

Also, the scene that OP posted ALWAYS makes me laugh haha.
