Holy shit yes! I own every volume as well, it is the most amazing series I have ever read. The drama is good as well, though they left off at a much earlier point than the book did.

The manga presumably left off earlier because the author died, sadly.

No no no, I mean the live action drama. It stopped a lot earlier than the manga did, as far as the plot went. Though the drama had some decently big changes and a lot more focus on the people themselves.

Oh, that sucks. I think I have the first 3 or 4 volumes? How many were published?

Oh, goodness, this looks like something I might really enjoy, but -- I'm autistic myself, so even though this series sounds sweet... my optimism is only a cautious one just because I've been burned so very many times by media whose 'positive' portrayals of autism left me feeling sick and anxious and sad and like a burden or a monster or a soulless robot. :(

Are there any autistic FS!ers out there who have read it? (Or anyone who knows an autistic that liked it?)

A flistie is the parent of an autistic child and he really likes it. Not sure if that helps.

As a parent if an autistic child and on the spectrum myself, I have yet to find anything that has our experiences. So I tend to be skeptical.

The skepticism is wise, but "With The Light" is very careful about its accuracy, and neither sugarcoats nor condemns the challenges that come from raising someone with ASD. (I'm also a parent of an autistic child, btw.) It's also representative of a (mostly) non-verbal autistic child rather than the usual "variation on Asperger's" depictions we see in media.

Much of the drama comes from the parents' struggle to deal with many things parents of non-spectrum children take for granted. Enrolling a student in a school that will provide actual care and instruction for their child. Taking the child to a doctor after an injury etc. The manga also introduces children with other disabilities (various types of autism, dyslexia, etc). Each volume also ends with personal accounts from family members of autistic individuals, and you can see how these experiences contributed to the stories in the manga. You may not feel that the experiences in the manga are exactly like your own, but they are well researched and are grounded in actual experiences.

Also, things are a little different because the manga takes place in Japan at least a decade ago. The social climate towards disability (seen as a willful nonconformity in some cases!) is much harsher than one experienced in most western countries, so the manga does account for that perspective.

This was the only thing I've ever found that had a character like my brother. The main character's son is pretty much exactly like him in terms of ability. When kids on tumblr talk about their headcanons with characters being autistic it's always a bit jarring for me since my experience with autism isn't just "hey, this person is awkward about social things!".
