What do you do with them? (This could be asked of anyone who collects figures.)

I used to collect figures way back when. I had a Vash and Wolfwood figures from Trigun. But I never did anything with them, so I gave them to a friend because I hated that they were taking up space. The only figure I had is a tiny one of Ed from Cowboy Bebop and I have it because she doubles as a paperweight.

I had the same issue (also gave mine away). They're lovely to look at but I need the space for other things.

Eh, I have a china cabinet. Since I have no china dishes and a lot of figurines, that's where they go.

depends on how old and how deep you were into the fandom, anon. I may no longer give two shits about YuYu Hakusho and Yu-Gi-Oh, but I still pose and display my YYH figs and damn if the Kotobukya Kaiba and Yugi currently dueling each other on top of the TV shelf aren't totally worth every penny we spent on them.

although I suppose I'm with you in that I do regret actually getting suckered into the shitty, low-end American DBZ figures. Some of them are really awful. And I dropped a pretty penny on SW figs back in the day and now I can't stand Star Wars in any incarnation, so I rue the fact that I have a complete set of Jedi Council members.

eBay your Star Wars figures?
Or maybe barter them for something you would like to have? You don't have to keep them.

I know how you feel.

There have been a few times I've been lucky enough to realize I'm falling out of a fandom and have been able to trade off expensive preorders, but others where I'm stuck with things I'm no longer interested in.

Some merch sells well in secondary markets though so that's always an option.

I like having em around for the memories haha. Even if I'm not into something anymore I still have affection for a lot of my old obsessions. Though yeah, I always wonder why I spent so much...

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That's why I buy very little merchandise any more. Now that I'm older, I'm aware I'm a fandom-hopper. There are some things that stick but never quite that intensely. So it's a shame to see all that stuff gathering dust. It's why these days I pretty much only buy fandom t-shirts. I figure I have to dress myself anyway, and by the time I'm truly sick of the fandom, it'll be time for a new shirt as well.

This is me with doujin, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, same here. I have a huge binder full of doujin, sitting in a chest in my closet. I still have a fondness for the fandom after all these years, but now I just look back and wince at all the money I spent.

AYRT

I mostly look at them and go "what was I thinking?!" There are a few I'd keep purely because they're beautiful artworks in their own right, but once I'm out of a fandom I don't really have any interest in the books otherwise.

Ebay used to be a great place for buying/selling doujin, but lately it feels like selling through your LJ/LJ comms or Tumblr is going to get more attention.

Which is a problem when you're no longer in those fandoms. I'd feel bad popping up just to say "here, buy my old shit!" I know it's irrational because the people there now are interested in those fandoms and the merch surrounding them, but I'd still feel bad.

I think the same sometimes. "Do you know how much money you've spent on memorabilia? What's wrong with you."

I used to be all over that stuff, but now I'm running out of space to put it. (I don't think I'm going to be able to resist buying one or two of those Bethesda funko figures though... That dragon one is omg adorable.)

Still keep most of it on 'display' and enjoy looking at it. (Even when it's a fandom I haven't been super enthusiastic about in some time. Like FMA...I love FMA, but haven't watched in a couple years and aren't in the fandom anymore. Even though I have the cheap version, Ed's pocketwatch is one of my favorite pieces of memorabilia.)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I buy the $200 ones. :)

In my experience, those are the only ones that have lasting value. I'm not in the MCU anymore, but those are some damn fine collectibles that I'm totally okay displaying/showing off. The cheaper figurines tend to be just cheap once the fandom love wears off.

I love my action figures. I just wished I had more glass fronted cabinets to display them in, with some of them being dressed in fabric clothes and stuff.
