Wagner isn't popular on tumblr. But if he ever became one you can bet your spleen there would be, "A friendly reminder, Wagner is awful for these reasons" posts.

As someone who's had Wagner as a problematic fave for a long time, I can say that the main thing people think they know about him is that he was a Nazi, which of course he was decades too early for. He was anti-Semitic and racist, but probably no more so than many of his class and nationality at the time. Like a lot of racists, he made exceptions for people he personally liked and admired. So yes, shitty by modern standards, but not exceptionally shitty.

The only proof we have that he might have been "anti-Semitic and racist" was his batshit sister's shit after he died. That most accounts disagree with. Like no serious scholars believe that verison of shit anymore. Read something from the last ten years please?

Wagner was anti-Semitic and racist, though; it comes through in his own writing, and even Nietzsche criticizes him for being anti-semitic.

Then again, he probably was no more racist than anyone else at the time....

Really? I just Googled that and only found some kid complaining about having to practice music - and they wrote "fuck [a bunch of other composers] too, someone talking about a sports person, and someone saying Ludwig of Bavaria wanted to fuck him... which is a whole different use of "fuck!"

Well, finding anything on tumblr via google/search can be a crapshoot, so.

The most recent one that I actually remember was in a silly "Which composer should you fight?" post - this one. I take "PLEASE PUNCH WAGNER IN THE FACE" as close enough to a 'Fuck Wagner', really.

I just got into Wagner recently and find his music absolutely beautiful. I must admit to having similar thoughts.

I missed having tumblr there to tell me exactly how problematic he is, probably in a "your Wagner is problematic" blog, complete with links to Daily Mail articles and other similarly 100% accurate and unbiased sources.

That's because tumblr knows shit about 'classical' musicians (except for the small group of classic nerds and they're definitely not the majority). They still believe Beethoven was a darker than black African guy (instead of probably possibly maybe having a mixed race heritage) and think that a Jazz music festival's tongue-in-cheek advertisment poster was proof that Mozart was black.

If you have access to JSTOR or other academic article databases, you can DEFINITELY find some "ur/my fave is problematic" essays not just about Wagner's racism in his personal life but in his work as well. I am sure these would translate great to tumblr essays.

For instance I believe there's a theory that his portrayal of greedy, hook-nosed dwarves is the (perhaps subconscious rather than deliberate) product of his antisemitism. Plus the whole thing where his work as an opera critic/essayist about What Opera Should Be helped tank Meyerbeer's reputation, ensuring that many works by a prominent Jewish composer would never be revived!

Sadly tho Wagner isn't even the biggest problem in modern opera anymore, it's the all the asshat directors who think brown/black/yellowface casting is a ok in 2015, jfc, opera sucks, pass it on.

This is amusing because a friend of mine does include ranting about how problematic Wagner was in most of their tags whenever he comes up on tumblr posts about Ludwig II or related topics.
