(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)Did they treat their neighbors horribly during the Cold War? Absolutely. But I don't think that means we should ignore the sacrifices they made in terms of stopping the Nazis.
The US also treated its neighbors like shit during the Cold War (Central and South America) but I don't think that diminishes the sacrifice our soldiers made in stopping the Nazis.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)It just bothers me that we have to tie Stalin's political aims to the dead Soviet soldiers.
I mean, I understand that the USSR, politically, wasn't a force for good for Eastern bloc nations.
But I would argue that the dead should still be honored for their contributions.
I think of it more like this:
Cancer treatment always has the chance of causing a secondary cancer down the line (radiation, for instance). But even if you get cancer again, does that mean that we shouldn't recognize the efforts of the doctors?
I guess it bothers me too because Stalin was just as awful to his own people in a lot of ways as he was to Eastern bloc nations and so it seems a bit unfair to me that we tie the soldiers' sacrifice to his actions and policies.
