Please do keep on ignoring their contributions on "liberating" Europe. The Red Army and the Soviet Union aren't worth glorifying.

I don't really understand this sentiment.

Why should we ignore the sacrifices of individual soldiers?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Because ultimately they didn't liberate shit, and instead took over several Eastern European countries that suffered behind the iron curtain for decades. The sacrifices made in the defense of their own country can be honored, but what they did elsewhere? Yeah, no.

I would argue, though, that their contribution to the war was essential to taking down the Nazis. The US, Britain, France, etc. would not have been able to liberate Western Europe without the Soviets splitting the Nazi's focus on the Eastern front.

Did they treat their neighbors horribly during the Cold War? Absolutely. But I don't think that means we should ignore the sacrifices they made in terms of stopping the Nazis.

The US also treated its neighbors like shit during the Cold War (Central and South America) but I don't think that diminishes the sacrifice our soldiers made in stopping the Nazis.

Liberating the Western Europe wasn't exactly the Soviets' goal; it was just the by-product of beating the Nazis on their home front and Stalin would have happily conquered Europe himself. It's like being thankful that you got lung cancer instead of Ebola.

I get that.

It just bothers me that we have to tie Stalin's political aims to the dead Soviet soldiers.

I mean, I understand that the USSR, politically, wasn't a force for good for Eastern bloc nations.

But I would argue that the dead should still be honored for their contributions.

I think of it more like this:

Cancer treatment always has the chance of causing a secondary cancer down the line (radiation, for instance). But even if you get cancer again, does that mean that we shouldn't recognize the efforts of the doctors?

I guess it bothers me too because Stalin was just as awful to his own people in a lot of ways as he was to Eastern bloc nations and so it seems a bit unfair to me that we tie the soldiers' sacrifice to his actions and policies.

We should have stopped at Russian pre-war border. If only it guaranteed Nazi won't come back... you'd be happily slaving now, and we wouldn't have to listen to this slander..

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Why don't you do exactly that with Ukraine right now? I bet they would be happy if you left them "happily slaving" alone.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-08 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck that.
