Well, I dunno. What if you're involved in the fandom for that one series? What if you're writing fic and/or drawing art for that one ship?

Then you would probably call yourself "a fan of X" as opposed to "someone who is In Fandom"

"fandom" doesn't mean every fandom ever.

No but it implies a sort of meta community about "fandom" and being in the overarching culture of it

Not all people who help out at their local shelter are into "social justice" as a meta culture, for example

To me, you could just as easily say "I'm in the X fandom."

I think maybe we just define fandom differently?

Maybe

To me, if I were only in one fandom and someone asked if I were in fandom I would say well... I'm in one, and not be sure if that counts because they would sound like they are asking "are you part of the overarching fandom meta culture"

Yeah, what an anon said downthread helped me realize I wasn't making that distinction. There's being in the cultural entity that is fandom, and then there's being in a fandom. I think you're right that they're different things.

Yeah exactly what I meant

The question presupposes someone in exactly one fandom would consider themselves in fandom or be part of meta culture enough to come to a place like this to respond which I think would be unlikely in the first place

I'm sure theres lots of people with only one fandom, literally everyone starts off with just one after all

I was in the fandom for one video game for a long time and it was the only fandom I had. Writing fic, doing meta, so on. I wouldn't have said I was really in fandom until several months after that when I started branching out and realising there were many other fandoms around and a general fandom community, so to speak and joining others though

Ah, so "fandom" in that sense is referring to the larger whole, with all its overarching norms and behaviors and whatnot. It's the fact that there's actually a wider culture tying all of the individual fandoms together.

I guess the difference is being in fandom vs. being in a fandom.
